We all had this, a past life where there was no help at all. All these carers and all this, it only came about in recent years. We all looked after our own children at home without any help whatsoever and especially migrant families have the problem that we don't have, the extended family support. We have just the nuclear family, just husband and wife.

A Group Facilitator

In Malaysia I never see disabled kids. In my own country I never see disabled kids. You know [when] they tell me about Down Syndrome, I didn't even know what Down Syndrome is.

The doctor keep telling me, "you have a child with Down Syndrome, you need to go to assess." I say, "what is Down Syndrome? I don't believe all these things." I don't believe because you don't see them. All these families keep the kids either in the house or somewhere away.

It used to be like that for different generations. I don't know about in Australia but certainly in New Zealand they used to keep them all in institutions.
