In this step you will learn:

What skills YOU need to help others let you speak-up for yourself

• What skills YOU are already good at when using self-advocacy (Activity 2.2 and 2.3)

• What skills YOU need to improve to be better at self-advocacy (Activity 2.4 and 2.5)

Step 2 will help you find out where you need to speak-up for yourself, what you are good at when speaking-up for yourself and what you need to improve to be better at speaking-up for yourself. In this Step you will be working on learning about yourself and what you are good at and what you would like to change in your life.

Activity 2.2: A Self-Advocacy Story that Worked


Think of a time when you have spoken up about something and people listened to you and you were able to make a decision about your life.

Think about:

- What the issue was
- What you said (if you tried)
- Who you spoke to
- What you said
- How you behaved
- What the other person(s) said
- How the other person(s) behaved
- Who helped you to speak-up for yourself
- What happened in the end
- How you felt

You can write notes if it helps you to remember.



Activity 2.3 What am I already good at?


From your self-advocacy story, think of all the things you are already good at when you are using self-advocacy.

Activity 2.4: A Self-Advocacy Story that Didn’t Work

Think of a time when you have tried to speak-up about something and people have not listened to you or you wanted to speak-up about something but didn’t.

Think about:

- What the issue was
- What you said (if you tried)
- Why you didn’t or couldn’t speak-up
- Who you spoke to
- What you said
- How you behaved
- What the other person(s) said
- How the other person(s) behaved
- What would have helped you to speak-up
- Who do you know who could of helped you to speak-up for yourself
- What happened in the end
- How you felt
